An exciting opportunity has arisen for someone to join our Construction and Maintenance team in a Full Time Capacity as a Skilled Labourer!

With over 500 acres of land and buildings, our dedicated Construction department and Australia Zoo is primarily responsible for the maintenance of municipal residences and buildings, along with the construction of new enclosures, displays and structures. The Skilled Labourer at Australia Zoo reports directly to the Chief Construction Officer and works alongside an experienced construction crew.

The Construction department is responsible for maintaining municipal residences and buildings, along with the construction of new enclosures, displays and structures. Skilled Labourers at Australia Zoo report directly to the Chief Construction Officer and work alongside an experienced construction crew.

A successful candidate will have excellent organisational, oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, combined with an eye for detail. They will have the ability to deliver within set timeframes and work well amongst a small team.

Duties Include: 

  • General carpentry and building/maintenance works.
  • Assist with the general maintenance of the facilities, fences and signage in and around the Zoo, including painting, cleaning and fixing whilst ensuring all Workplace Health and Safety Guidelines are adhered to.
  • General cleaning duties of work sites, work sheds and equipment.
  • Assist tradespersons with trades oriented tasks when necessary. This includes Carpentry, Concreting, Plumbing, Welding and General Labouring Duties.
  • Asphalt patching with cold mix.
  • Operation of plant machinery when required to assist Tradespersons.
  • General gardening and horticulture when required to complete job areas.
  • Remove old paint or paper using sanders, scrapers, blowtorches, liquid paint removers and steam strippers as appropriate.
  • Prepare working areas for tradespersons to ensure ease of access to sites, tools and equipment required for jobs.
  • Assist to monitor and direct safety checks on staff, facilities, equipment and work site.
  • Other duties as requested by the Chief Construction Officer or Senior Management.

Essential Criteria: 

  • Hold current Manual Driver’s Licence.
  • Available to work weekends, public holidays, and school holiday periods.
  • Trade Qualifications, including a current construction ‘White Card’.
  • Professional Discretion.
  • Knowledge of industry and sector of work.
